How to book IELTS

Before you book
- You know which test you need. Academic, General Training or IELTS for UKVI: if you are not sure, see Which IELTS you need.
- You have a valid identity document. A passport or national identity card. You bring the same document to the test, so it must also be valid on test day. For IELTS for UKVI, a national identity card is accepted only in the country that issued it.
- You have a payment card.
- Are you under 18? The British Council asks for written consent from a parent or guardian.
Steps
- Open the British Council’s booking site and choose your test: IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training or the test for a UK visa (on the booking site it is called “IELTS for UK Visas”).
- Choose how you will take the test: IELTS on computer.
- Choose the country and city. For Zagreb and Split, choose Croatia. For IELTS for UKVI in Ljubljana, choose Slovenia.
- Choose a date. Each date shows the fee and the time of the Speaking test with an examiner.
- Create an account and enter your personal details. Our advice: enter them exactly as they appear in the document you will bring to the test. At booking the British Council also asks for a photograph or scan of that document.
- Pay for the test. Your booking is complete only once payment has been received in full. Confirmation arrives by e-mail.
After you book
You use your account to sign in to the Test Taker Portal. It holds the details of your test date and, after the test, your result. With your booking you also get access to the IELTS Ready Premium preparation materials: Preparation.
Changing your date, cancelling and access arrangements
The terms for changing your date and cancelling are set out on the Dates and fees page. If you need access arrangements, contact us at least six weeks before the test: Test day.
Who processes your data
The details you enter when you book are collected by the British Council, on its site and under its privacy policy. Our test centre uses them to run the test. More: Rules and Privacy.
Questions about booking
Why do I book on the British Council’s site and not here?
We run IELTS as an official British Council test centre, so bookings and payments go through its system. That is why there is no booking form here: the button takes you straight there.
The booking site does not offer a date in my city. What now?
IELTS Academic and General Training are taken in Zagreb and Split, and IELTS for UKVI in Zagreb and Ljubljana. If you do not see a date for your city, write to us.
Can my school or employer book for me?
A booking is made in the test taker’s name and with their document. If you are booking for several test takers, get in touch and we will agree the easiest way to do it.
