Who IELTS General Training is for

  • For migration to Canada. For Express Entry the Canadian authorities accept only IELTS General Training.
  • For migration to Australia and New Zealand. Both countries accept both General Training and Academic for immigration visas.
  • For work and professional training. Your employer or school will tell you which test and which score they ask for.
  • For a UK visa you need the IELTS for UKVI version, which is taken in Zagreb and Ljubljana.

Results

Each part is marked on the nine-band IELTS scale, in whole and half bands. Immigration authorities may set a minimum score for each part separately, so it is not enough to look at the overall band score. The British Council states that results for tests on computer arrive in one to five days. More: Band scores.

If one part does not go well

With IELTS One Skill Retake you retake just one part of the test. Be careful: the Canadian authorities do not accept One Skill Retake for Express Entry.

Questions and answers

Is a General Training result enough for university study?

IELTS Academic is intended for university admission, and General Training for study below degree level, work and migration. Some universities accept General Training as well: Politecnico di Milano, for example, for master’s programmes. What yours accepts is stated on its website.

How old a result do immigration authorities accept?

Canada and New Zealand require a result that is no more than two years old when the application is submitted. For other countries, check the time limits on the websites of their immigration authorities: the links are on the Work and migration page.
