Who IELTS Academic is for
- For future students. IELTS Academic is intended for admission to study in English. Which test and which score your university asks for is stated on its website. Examples of requirements and deadlines: Study abroad.
- For doctors, nurses and other healthcare professions. The General Medical Council, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Ireland’s NMBI and Australia’s Ahpra ask for IELTS Academic. Requirements by regulator: Professional registration.
- Not for Canada’s Express Entry. For that programme the Canadian immigration authorities accept only IELTS General Training.
What is tested
The test has four parts and takes 2 hours 45 minutes in total. Listening, Reading and Writing are taken in one sitting, with no break.
| Part of the test | Length | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | about 30 minutes | Four recordings, 40 questions: conversations and talks, on topics from the everyday to the academic. |
| Reading | 60 minutes | Three long texts from books, journals, magazines, newspapers and online sources, 40 questions. |
| Writing | 60 minutes | Two tasks: a description of a graph, table or diagram (at least 150 words) and an essay (at least 250 words). The essay counts for twice as much. |
| Speaking | 11 to 14 minutes | A conversation with an examiner in three parts. The conversation is recorded. |

Results
Each part is marked on the nine-band IELTS scale, in whole and half bands, and the overall band score is the average of the four parts rounded to the nearest half band. The British Council states that results for tests on computer arrive in one to five days. How to read your result: Band scores.
If one part does not go well
You do not have to retake the whole test. With IELTS One Skill Retake you retake just one part, within 60 days. Before you do, check whether the organisation you are sending your result to accepts it.
Preparation
When you book with the British Council you get access to the IELTS Ready Premium materials. The other options, from free practice tests to preparation centres, are described on the Preparation page. If you do not know how far you are from the score you need, start with a level check.
Questions and answers
Does my university accept IELTS?
The IELTS partners state that more than 13,500 organisations accept the test. Check in the official search tool and on the university’s own website whether yours is among them and which score it asks for.
Can I take IELTS Academic at home?
The British Council offers IELTS Online, a version of IELTS Academic that is taken at home. Not all organisations accept it, and it is not accepted for immigration applications. More: IELTS Online.
Do I need IELTS for UKVI for a UK university?
Not necessarily. Under the UK government’s rules, universities can assess your English themselves for study at degree level or above, so IELTS Academic may be enough. Ask the university before you book. More: IELTS for UKVI.
