Check your level of English
Request the test
The test opens through your personal link. That is why we need your name and e-mail address; your date of birth lets us identify you reliably.
How the level check works
Leave your name and e-mail address
The test opens straight away. We also send you the link by e-mail, so you can take it later if you prefer, on a computer or a mobile phone.
Take the test
The questions get harder or easier according to your answers. From level A2 upwards, one short text and one recording follow. The instructions in the test are in English.
Come back with your level
At the end of the test you see your level, and a button brings you back to this page. Further down it shows the range of IELTS scores for your level and what to do next.

About the test
The test is called NGPT (Next Generation Placement Tests). It was developed in an Erasmus+ project involving the Jantar school, the company Amber IT Solutions and partner schools, and language schools use it to place new learners in courses.
The test does not replace IELTS and does not give a certificate. It was not produced by the British Council, nor is it part of IELTS. It shows the level you are at now. Like any short test, it may place a candidate on the border between two levels in the neighbouring one.
Questions about the level test
Is the test really free?
Yes. You pay nothing and you are not committing to anything.
Why do you ask for my e-mail address?
The test opens through a personal link, which we send you by e-mail. After the test we may also send you advice on the IELTS test and on preparation. We use your details only for that; you can read more in the privacy policy.
Can I work out my IELTS score from my level?
No, you cannot. The level points to a range of scores, but IELTS also assesses Speaking and Writing, and the level test does not check those. An official practice test has questions from past tests and an interface like the one in the test: Preparation.
What do B1+ and B2+ mean?
They are the test’s intermediate levels: you are past B1, or B2, and on your way to the next level. The IELTS partners’ comparison covers levels B1, B2, C1 and C2, so for the intermediate levels we show the range of the base level.
